I’ve been using the Pathfinder Canteen Cooking Kit for quite a few months. In fact, I started field testing the kit back in the summer and have used it almost exclusively since then. This canteen cooking kit is everything I’ve come to love from Pathfinder over the years. It’s high quality, robust, well thought out and affordable.
Pathfinder Canteen Cooking Kit Review
The entire canteen cook kit comes in around the $50-55 price range. Which is a heck of a deal for how much quality gear you’re getting.

How I Use The Canteen Cook Kit
I generally carry the Canteen, Nesting Cup and Lid in my bag and leave the nesting stove behind to save weight. The nesting stove does a great job, don’t get me wrong. But I typically build a fire or use a twig or canister stove.
The Canteen & Nesting Cup give me enough options on a day hike or even minimal overnighters. With these two pieces of gear, I can boil water in either container. As well as prepare my food and eat from the nesting cup.
Pathfinder Canteen Cup Review
The biggest selling point of this canteen cup for me, over any others, is the large foldover handle. As you can see above, there’s a lot to grab onto. Which is important while cooking over a hot fire. The last thing I want is a tiny handle that heats up quickly and has no real-estate to grab onto.
The cup & handle are perfect, aside from one minor issue: Whenever you flip the canteen cup upside down to shake out leftover food or liquids, the lock disengages and allows the cup to flop around. If this could be remedied the cup would be golden.
Pathfinder Canteen Lid Review
No piece of camp cookware is complete without a solid lid. Lids help to keep debris, ash and unwanted junk out of your food and drinks. The Pathfinder Canteen Lid is a perfect fit for the cup. It seals up with no gaps and isn’t too tight or too loose. The addition of drain holes is welcomed for straining off excess liquids as well.
The canteen cup lid also features a nice D-Ring. It is large enough to easily grab onto with a spork or stick (as shown above). The D-Ring also has enough friction so it stays in position without being easily flicked over.
Tough Camp Cookware
Pathfinder’s camp cookware has always been a trusted solution when I’m needing something that is extremely tough and near bomb-proof. Whether I’m cooking over gas stoves, sizzling coals or open flame, the Pathfinder Canteen Cooking Kit will take everything I throw at it.
Go Solo or Build a Full Kit Around It
Whether you’re using the Canteen Cooking Kit by itself or pairing it with some other pieces of cookware, it’s a great piece of gear to add to your arsenal. For example, I love using this kit with my Pathfinder Folding Skillet when I’m cooking meat.

Pathfinder Canteen Cooking Kit Value
One of the reasons I wanted to field test the Pathfinder Canteen Cooking Kit was because of the excellent experiences I’ve had with their other gear. But also because of how affordable the kit is. For $50-55, this kit cannot be beaten in my opinion. It is one of the highest value pieces of gear that I own.
Pathfinder Canteen Cooking Kit (9.25 out of 10)
As you’ve probably gathered throughout my review…I love this cook set. It is my go-to for solo trips and essential in my larger bushcraft cook kit. The military canteen design is tried and true (yet improved upon by Pathfinder), it easily fits into any of my rucksacks or haversacks, it provides enough capacity and capabilities as a standalone cook set and is a tremendous value. I have and will continue to recommend this setup to anyone!
Pros:
- Robust build quality
- Strong stainless steel throughout
- Near perfect nesting cup
- Great fitting lid
- Excellent price to value ratio
- The kidney shape maximizes space in your pack and allows it to be carried on your hip
- Great design features which take the tried & true military canteen cook set to a new level
- Pathfinder/SRO is a great company who stand behind their products and do their part to educate the outdoor/bushcraft industry
Cons:
- I wish the handle of the canteen cup had a ‘positive-lock’ that would not slide & disengage when turned upside down during cleaning
