One of my favorite types of gear this year has been twig stoves. They allow you to have a fire anywhere(well, pretty much), they’re lightweight in exchange for their capability and you can use practically anything as a fuel that you find outdoors.
So, with all of that said, we’re gonna take a look at the most lightweight & compact twig stove that I’ve tried in this long-term Firebox Nano Stove Review.
How do I use the Firebox Nano Stove?
The Firebox Nano Stove is my go-to ultralight stove in the field. Here are some quick-points of when/how I use the Nano:
- In a lightweight haversack kit
- Folded up in my pocket if I’m carrying no bag & just a bottle/cup
- Under a tarp or open-shelter during the rain (just be careful to keep the flames low by using larger diameter fuel)
- For a quick cup of tea or a mountain house meal
- To make char cloth
- I love having the option of using a twig stove during a fire ban or a time that doesn’t permit a full campfire
- The list could go on and on…
Firebox Nano – Ease of Use
A lot of people seem to struggle with twig stoves. I totally understand because I was the same way when I first started using them. But, if you treat them like a mini contained campfire, you’ll be good go to & catch on quickly. Here are some quick tips for using the Firebox Nano with great success:
- Set it up on a stable and even surface (away from wind if possible).
- Preload your stove with dry, large diameter fuel. I have found that splitting a wood-round into 4th’s works really well. (ie: Swedish torch)
- Have a dry tinder bundle ready and ignite it with your preferred fire starting method.
- Once lit, place the engulfed tinder bundle onto the stovetop.
- Then place small diameter twigs on top until your pre-loaded fuel catches fire. (use pencil lead size twigs, moving up to pencil thick twigs to establish enough heat)
- Once you’ve got to this point your fuel should’ve caught fire and you’ll just need to maintain it.
My long-term use of the Firebox Nano
I first started using the Firebox Nano Stove and X-Case back in February of this year. I figured it would be like most gear and get used for a little bit, then tossed into the bin with everything else. But, I was wrong. After I used it extensively in my ultralight bushcraft kit, I fell in love with this stove. It has been used frequently in rotation with my other stoves and always wins a spot in my bag when weight is the biggest concern.
Firebox Nano Stove Quality
I have been very pleased with the quality of the Firebox Nano Stove. It is well-built, sturdy and functions perfectly every time. I have had nothing but great experiences with this stove over the past 9 months or so.
If you’ve been in the market for a great lightweight stove for your adventures, I’d highly recommend you check out the Firebox Nano Stove. It will continue to live in my rotation of outdoor cook-kits from here!
