I do a ton of studio photography these days. Whether it’s for clients through my design studio or for my personal Instagram. I’ve grown to really love this medium of photography…Especially Flat Lay Photography. These shots are extremely fun to put together and I can get lost tweaking 1 single image to perfection for hours.
So, with that said, I decided it was time to put together a short video showing a bit of my behind the scenes process. And, of course, share a bit about the gear I use to create these types of photos!
Flat Lay Photography Tripod
The most important piece of gear (other than a great camera) for Flat Lay Photography is your tripod. You, of course, want something that is rock solid. But you also need something that allows you to get over top of your subject. Traditional tripods won’t allow you to do this.
However, a tripod like the Vanguard Alta Pro 2+ is made for this kind of work and it’s my favorite tripod of all time. I use it daily in my studio.
Best Flat Lay Photography Camera
A tie for the most important piece of gear for Flat Lay Photography is your camera. I’ve honestly used everything from an iPhone 8 with Moment Lenses to my compact Sony RX100V.
But, my all-time favorite camera that allows me to achieve the look I want is the Fujifilm X-T2. It has such a sharp & warm look that suits my style perfectly. I have been pairing it with the 35mm f2 and 50mm f2 lenses as of late and have been loving the results!
Final Flat Lay from YouTube Video
The final image was shot with the Fujifilm X-T2, XF35mm F2, and Vanguard Alta Pro 2+ 264CT.
Post-Processed in Adobe Camera Raw + Photoshop with my Custom Awaken Presets for that moody look & feel.
Flat Lay Photography Props
I cannot emphasize enough how important your props are in Flat Lay Photography. For me, I could spend every day scouting antique markets & thrift shops finding the next amazing and unique thing to go in my flat lays.
I absolutely love the hunt and finally finding that next piece that catches my eye!
