I have been happily carrying my production Gerber Fastball for over a year now. To me, it’s the perfect size for Everyday Carry, it’s super smooth, can be operated one-handed and maintains a killer edge for a very long while.
So, whenever Gerber Gear asked me if I’d like to design my own Gerber Custom knife I was super stoked. And, as you can imagine by the title of this article, that leads us right into the Awaken Edition Gerber Fastball. Let’s dive in and check out what I came up with (and why)…
Gerber Custom Fastball
Since I already loved everything about the Gerber Fastball’s functionality I kept the same blade (S30V Wharncliffe) and altered it to my liking/needs from a design standpoint…
A lot of my gear is OD Green or earth tones, so I wanted this knife to blend in with my existing gear. I went with the Flat Green Sage Anodized Aluminum Handles, which actually look grey in most lighting conditions. I topped the aluminum handles off with a Topo Pattern for good measure. And, for anyone who follows me, you know that I’m a huge fan of land navigation…So this pattern was very fitting. Lastly, I blacked out most of the hardware and the blade.
Blaze Orange is a Must
One very intentional design aspect that I wanted for my Gerber Fastball was a Blaze Orange backspacer…
A lot of times when I’m out on an adventure or a backcountry trip I’m reaching for the quickest tool that I can deploy to make a quick cut. 9 times out of 10 that is my pocket knife since it can be operated one-handed. Every now and then, I’ll forget to put it back in my pocket and instead lay it down. Or it’ll fall off my lap onto the ground. Without something very bright it’s very easy to lose a tool, even on a bright day.
So my Fastball features a very intentional Blaze Orange Backspacer for this reason. It will also be receiving a bright orange paracord lanyard soon.
Awaken Edition Available Now
Perhaps one of the coolest parts about this whole process was that I got to put my Bison Logo on the knife! And even cooler, this knife is available for YOU to purchase on GerberGear.com right now if you dig my design.
If you do happen to pick one up, tag me over on Instagram – I’d love to see how you’re using the knife!
