A couple of weeks ago I posted about the Helikon-Tex Bushcraft Haversack and I shared my entire kit for 2021. If you haven’t seen that video yet, you can check it out here. But, what happens when I outgrow the haversack and need a bit more space for overnight gear? That’s where the Helikon-Tex Bergen Backpack comes in.
Helikon-Tex Bergen Backpack Review
I am currently field-testing the Helikon-Tex Bergen Backpack and want to spend several more months with it before I share my entire thoughts about it. But here’s what I have to say about it at the moment…
- Quality:
Helikon-Tex is one of my favorite companies and their quality is consistently phenomenal. The Cordura fabrics used in the Bergen Backpack is tough and able to withstand a lot of hard use in the outdoors. The buckles work great in any weather. And the padding is very comfortable. - Design (Bergen vs. Matlida):
I am a huge fan of the Helikon-Tex Matilda backpack. However, for me, it is too large for summer overnights and certainly too large for day-hikes. That’s where the Bergen pack comes in. The Bergen backpack retains the same fantastic design as the Matilda backpack, but its smaller size makes it perfect for trips when I don’t need a lot of bulky winter gear. - Price, value & availability:
Currently, the Helikon-Tex Bergen Backpack is only available on their international website and it’s priced at $119.00. I think this is a fair price for the pack. I would love to see Helikon-Tex’s gear made readily available here in their United States…But their international shipping has been fast & reliable in my experience.
How I’m using the Helikon-Tex Bergen Backpack
As I mentioned earlier in this article, when I run out of room in my Helikon-Tex Bushcraft Haversack I reach for the Helikon-Tex Bergen Backpack. Here’s what I am currently carrying in my Helikon-Tex Bergen Backpack:
- All the gear from my Helikon-Tex Bushcraft Haversack Kit
* Watch that entire video if you haven’t already – I simply switch my haversack contents out into outside pockets of the Bergen Backpack and use the main compartment for bulkier items. - Helikon-Tex Swagman Roll
- Silky Big Boy Saw
- A hammock, if I’m hammock-camping
- Food for overnight trips
- 16 or 24″ Ax
