As you all know by now, I’m a huge fan of putting together kits for my outdoor and EDC endeavors. For this particular kit, I wanted a barebones side-bag option that was smaller than a standard haversack. But, I needed it to be large enough to hold a simple cook kit while on the trail.
My E&E kit bag is used in unison with my Helikon-Tex Numbat Chest Kit, which you’ll see later on in the article. This combination is ideal for short land nav scouts and hikes into the woods.
Helikon-Tex E&E Pouch Straps
To get things started, let me explain how I made this simple pouch into a side bag since it does not come standard with a strap from Helikon-Tex.
- Pouch:
You’ll, of course, need the Helikon-Tex E&E Pouch as the basis of your new kit (available on Amazon here). - 5.11 Rush Tier Buckles:
I had some sandstone buckles and straps lying around that I used, which matched this setup perfectly. They also act as a quick-release system so I can easily take the E&E Pouch on or off. (available on Amazon here) - Nylon Webbing:
I lucked out and had some coyote colored nylon webbing that matched the whole setup and acts as my strap. (browse Amazon for webbing)
Please consider purchasing from my Amazon links above. I receive a small kickback at no extra cost to you, which helps me to create this content.
Helikon-Tex E&E Pouch Loadout
As I mentioned earlier, I have this configured as a simple side bag to expand the capabilities of my chest kit bag. It has a lot of capacity for its small size and does a great job of holding the bulky items that do not fit into my chest kit bag.
Here is the loadout that I carry in my E&E Pouch:
- Nature Valley Bar and some Hot Chocolate
- A 12 Foot hank of brightly colored paracord
- Toaks Titanium Cup & Lid
- 20oz Helikon-Tex Tritan Bottle
- Firebox Nano Stove (inside, I keep a lighter + homemade fire starters)
- ExoTac matchCAP XL with UCO Stormproof Matches
- Fatwood on a brightly colored tether with my matches
- Opinel No.12 Saw
- 5 x 1/2″ Überleben Kräftig Ferro Rod (looped onto the side molle webbing)
- 55 Gallon Drum Liner shoved into the back pocket (not pictured)
I have been really happy with this kit and would absolutely recommend you put something together like this if it looks interesting to you. It has been perfect for short day hikes & trips to the woods when I want to warm up a quick drink and enjoy a snack in my favorite place.
Another perk of the Helikon-Tex E&E Pouch is that it can adapt to future platforms and bags that accept molle style webbing. So, you’re not tied down to only using it as a side bag or pouch.
