07/10/17 Mora Bushcraft Black Update (Part 2 out now): I recently released a Mora Bushcraft Black Review “Part 2” here. Give it a read once you’re done with this one 🙂
Welcome back to another Knife Review, everyone! Today i’m going to share my thoughts on the Mora Bushcraft Black. This has been my preferred hiking and all-around adventuring knife for around a year now. So, I figured it was high-time that I reviewed it.
Overall Impressions on the Mora Bushcraft Black
Price Range: The Mora Bushcraft Black is in line with the Morakniv quality we’ve all come to know and love. While I wish this knife was more along the price range of their Classic’s or Companion’s (sub $20), it does jump up to the $60 range. But based on what we’re getting here, the price is justified, if I’m honest. This knife is made heavier and it even appears that Mora holds this knife to a slightly higher standard while producing it, based on the quality.
Feel in Hand: Immediately when you pick the Bushcraft Black knife up you’ll feel as though you’re holding a full-tang knife that is capable of taking on the world (though the Bushcraft Black is a rat-tail tang). The rubberized handle fits your hand like a glove and gives a positive grip for any outdoor tasks that you’ll come upon. There are also palm swells in all of the right areas on this grip, which make it the most comfortable fixed blade that I own.
The blade is also noticeably thicker on the Bushcraft Black than their other blades (companions, classics, etc). They put a perfect 90° spine on the Bushcraft Black as well (making it perfect in combination with ferro rods). With all of this capability, Mora still kept this knife incredibly lightweight. Which makes it a total joy in the woods, when I’m counting ounces.
Mora Bushcraft Black Sheath: The great design doesn’t stop at the knife. This might just be my favorite OEM sheath on the market. It is a Kydex/Molded Style Sheath that has a swiveling belt loop. Which lends itself perfectly to my hiking style since I always use a hip belt on my backpack. The swiveling belt loop also allows the knife to sit just below the hip belt on my pack, and I can easily swivel the knife handle to my desired orientation when drawing it. Mora has hit a home run on this sheath and I couldn’t be happier.
Usability: Mora makes no non-sense knives that are made for work. I personally love using all of my Mora’s (the Bushcraft Black included) for woodworking tasks. Whether I’m carving a spoon, preparing kindling/fire wood or other general camping/hiking chores. The Bushcraft Black is my go-to-knife for light to medium work, as well as some heavy stuff.
The only time I put this knife away and reach for another is when i’m batoning through larger firewood. Sure, I have seen reports of this knife handling batoning with no problems. However, I go ahead and opt for a full-tang knife in this case so I don’t accidentally ruin my Bushcraft Black.
However, if my pack were to fall off the side of a cliff with all of my excess supplies in it, leaving me with just the Bushcraft Black on my belt – Would I feel underpowered with it in the woods? Absolutely not! If the Bushcraft Black were the only knife I had on my person and I was forced to survive in the woods with it, I would feel totally comfortable doing so. I would go about my normal chores with it and take slightly more cautious steps to ensure I didn’t damage it while batoning wood.
Would I recommend the Mora Bushcraft Black?
I think you know the answer, and it’s 110% yes! This is the easiest 10 out of 10 that I’ve ever given a product.
I have owned the Mora Classics and Companions for a really long time. In fact, the Mora Classic was the first true bushcraft/woods blade I ever purchased (I bought it as a companion to my Condor Bushlore). So whenever I chose to give the Bushcraft Black a shot I was incredibly excited for it to arrive. And that excitement was met with total satisfaction. This knife exceeds my expectations and it’s always a joy to carry/use.
