Mountain House Food Review
Welcome back to another review here on the Adventure Blog, everyone! Today I’m going to chat about Mountain House food, specifically the newly released Turkey Dinner Casserole. I have been eating Mountain House meals for years on the trail and at camp, so when they asked me if I’d like to try their new Thanksgiving-Inspired meal, I was super excited. So, without further ado – Let’s chat about this freeze-dried wonder food!
What are Mountain House Meals?
I want to begin by defining what these meals are and what they are not. A lot of people think Mountain House meals are the equivalent of nasty MRE’s that you get from a military surplus store. But, this couldn’t be further from the truth.
Mountain House meals, yes, were originally made for US Special Forces to provide them with wholesome and lightweight meals. However, these days, Mountain House meals are the top choice for backpackers and campers looking for tasty food on the trail. (read more about Mountain House here)
I would personally choose a Mountain House meal over most fast-food these days. I’ve even been known to make these in my own kitchen when my wife is gone and I’m too lazy to cook (lol). They are filling, super easy to make, taste phenomenal and they’re a great price for the amount of food you receive.
How do you make a Mountain House Meal?
The process seriously couldn’t be more simple for making a Mountain House meal.
- Boil the amount of water it calls for
- Open the meal pouch and take out the absorbing pack
- Pour the water and stir
- Wait 10 minutes or so
- EAT!
It’s that simple.
Gear Recommended For Cooking Mountain House Meals
I have tested and reviewed a lot of outdoor cookware and stoves. I would personally recommend the following camping and hiking cook setup: MSR Pocket Rocket Stove, Light My Fire Titanium Spork, and Stanley Adventure Cookset. This is the setup that I use 90% of the time while making Mountain House Meals and I love it.
Mountain House Turkey Dinner Casserole Review
Now, on to Mountain House’ new meal – The Turkey Dinner Casserole. I’ll make this one short & sweet with a pro’s and con’s list below:
Pros:
- Tasted like Thanksgiving in a bag.
- Would be a GREAT cold weather meal.
- Perfect Large Portions (especially after a day of hard work making camp and hiking around).
- Very Filling.
- The amount of water it called for was spot on…It wasn’t soupy at all.
- The ingredients complimented each other perfectly and it was well-rounded.
- As always, the cleanup was incredibly easy…Just seal the bag up and pack it out with you.
Cons:
- It was a tad bit too salty if I’m being very critical. But I’d much rather have too much salt than not enough.
Final thoughts for this particular meal:
- I’d give the Turkey Dinner Casserole meal a solid 9.5 out of a 10.
- I’ll absolutely be getting this meal again for Fall & Winter when things cool off.

Of all the freeze-dried food I’ve tried this is by far the best in terms of quality, shelf life, and taste.
I have enjoyed these meals for years and want to thank Mountain House for allowing me to test this new dish on their dime this time around!
