I’m finally writing about this Opinel knife that I have loved and used for countless years. This knife is not only a fantastic EDC (Every Day Carry) Pocket Knife, but it is especially handy in the outdoors. So, without further ado, let’s jump into my official Opinel No 6 Review!
Simplicity at its Best
The simplicity of Opinel Knives cannot be beaten. The No.6 is a late 1800’s designed pocket knife that features a simple locking barrel to ensure safety for its user. It features a single carbon steel blade with a convex grind. And utilizes fantastic natural beechwood handles.

Opinel for Bushcraft
I love my Opinel No 6 Knife for bushcrafting and all-around camp tasks. Here are a few quick points about why I love Opinel Knives for Bushcraft & Outdoors use:
- 90° Spine:
Opinel No 6’s have a very sharp 90° Spine. So, you always have a striker and/or scraper with you. - Blade Grind:
The flatter profile of the blade grind is different than traditional Scandi bushcraft knives. So it offers some variety in your kit. Which comes in especially handy during food prep. - Lightweight:
Opinel’s are extremely lightweight (1.2oz to be exact). Anyone could justify that addition of weight, in my opinion. - Field Sharpening:
Opinel’s Carbon Steel is very easy to sharpen in the field, with simple sharpening tools. - Holds a great edge:
Once you have the Opinel No 6 sharpened, it holds its edge for an admirable amount of time. - The No 6 has an extremely sharp point:
The tip of any knife should not be overlooked. A very sharp and fine point is invaluable for making precision cuts, opening packages and even as a makeshift (but less effective) awl.
- Affordable:
Last but not least, the Opinel No 6 is very affordable at just over $10. And for a pocket knife, which could be lost more easily than a fixed blade, that provides some peace of mind in the outdoors.
Who would love it?
The great thing about Opinel Knives is their simplicity, as I mentioned earlier. They don’t put themselves inside of a box in terms of style, price or anything else. Which make them more accessible and accepted by a vast majority of people.
With that said, I could see anyone carrying the Opinel No 6. But I could especially see it coming in handy for traditionalists, bushcraft/camp enthusiasts, ultralight backpackers, and people looking for a solid knife for a very affordable price.
Opinel No 6 Knife (10 out of a 10)
The Opinel No 6 has been a long time favorite knife of mine and I honestly cannot believe it’s taken me this long to put a review up of it. This knife is fantastic for general everyday carry and bushcraft/camping kits. And for $12 (give or take), you will not find a better value in the folding knife market!
