Urban Survival & “Resource Walks”
This year I have been doing a deep dive into Urban Survival training. This has been a pretty big shift from wilderness survival in some ways…But not as much as you’d think in other ways.
One of my favorite practices for Urban Survival training is the “resource walks”…Rather known as Walmart Trips or online shopping for neat gadgets.
I love browsing around and finding fantastic tools that are not super expensive & can be carried on my person. Here are a few of my favorites (from the photo above) that I’ve started using and training with as of late…
Grim Workshop Card & Micro Tools + Mini Glow Sticks (for low-light work)
Grim Workshop Tools
I have been having a total BLAST with the Grim Workshop Survival Cards and Micro Tools lately. They have everything from fishing-themed cards, to escape & evasion tools (shown above).
I honestly thought these might be a little gimmicky at first (because most small gear like this is)…But I couldn’t have been more wrong. Grim’s cards & micro tools work really well, are well made, and are super easy to carry in my wallet or on my keychain. I always have at least 2 pieces of gear from Grim Workshop on my person at all times.

Pioneer Woman Paring Knife EDC
Go ahead and laugh with me about this item (because I still giggle at it too)…
I’ve been using a kitchen paring knife off & on here lately…Specifically the 3.5″ Pioneer Woman Paring Knife. This knife has become pretty hard to find because there are a lot of folks who use these as improvised defensive weapons when they’re traveling. They cost $8, can be purchased from most Walmart’s when you get to your travel location & left behind when you depart to go back home. (Google search “tactical fruit knife” some time and enjoy the ride. There is a lot of info about “tactical kitchen knives” out there)
Back to this knife though…
It has great ergonomics as a defensive (fighting) knife. But they are also fantastic camp knives. I never thought I’d say that about a Pioneer Woman blade…But I’m serious. They are razor-sharp, have decent steel for $8, and a sharp 90-degree spine for scraping Ferro Rods. I plan to make a sheath for this red-handled one soon.
Titan Survivorcord
Survivorcord is like paracord on steroids! It boasts a higher breaking strength and has more useful inner strands (tinder, fishing line, utility line. And kevlar line in the XT model). I replace my boot laces with this cordage and carry a little hank of it with me. It adds a lot of peace of mind knowing I have this resource with me at all times.
